Your first conversation with AI

Ten minutes from now, you'll have used an AI assistant for something genuinely useful. No account juggling, no paid plans — just one free tool and this guide.

Step 1

Pick ONE assistant (don't overthink it)

All three of these are free and good. Choose based on what you already use:

Any of them works for everything in this guide. You can switch later.

Step 2

Type your first message like you're texting a smart friend

The biggest beginner mistake is typing keywords like it's 2005 search ("weather phoenix"). Instead, write a full sentence with context:

❌ Weak: "resume tips"
✅ Strong: "I'm a bookkeeper applying to an office manager job. Rewrite my resume summary in 3 sentences: I've done payroll for 12 years and trained 4 coworkers."

The more the AI knows about your situation, the more useful its answer.

Step 3

Try these three starter prompts

Follow up! If the answer isn't right, say "make it shorter," "simpler," or "give me 3 more options." That back-and-forth is where AI shines.

When NOT to trust it

AI gets things wrong — confidently

Treat every answer like advice from a smart friend who sometimes makes things up:
